We (Coon Rapids) lost to Stillwater in the first round of the playoffs. We had a fantastic season, but it was still a devastating ride.

Devastating, that is, until Randy B., my good friend and also a Jay Esmay for Congress supporter, turned to me and asked, "Who won?" Now, picture me as a young buck, crying my eyes out at the collapse of my whole world, knowing that the rest of my teammates were the in the same state of despair, and then Randy asks....?

It was so outlandish and unexpected, that I started laughing. (Later that night, with his parents at the hospital, Randy discovered he had received a concussion in the 2nd quarter, which explained why he still doesn't remember the second half) That moment on the bus is burned in my memory. The laughter did not remove the empty feeling in my stomach, but I was done mourning. Resolve and reflection set in, and life moved on. It was a great season.

This campaign has brought me many new friends. Representative Matt & Laura Dean - all around, great people. Senator Amy & Chris Koch - again, great people with a great family. Representative Mike Charron - hardworking, intelligent, friendly, good person. Representative Tom Emmer - kick-butt guy, we need more like him. Senator Betsy Wergin - what an amazing lady. Representative Mark & Heidi Olson - they get it, they live what they believe. Along with all of the other fine legislators from the Sixth District, Minnesota is in good hands.

To my supporters, I really want to say, "I'm sorry I failed you." But I know them, and I know not a single one of them would let me get away with saying those words. I am blessed.

I started going through my supporters/friends one-by-one, but have decided I really shouldn't put their names on the blog. But to everyone who understood the message and believed that Washington needs people whose primary motivation is service to others, Thank You.

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: Here I am. He showed me a coin from the unit he served with while defending our Nation:

Jay,

The mottos from the coin that I showed you tonight. The coin has 2 simple messages.

The latin means:"Truth Conquers All Chains"- I thought it was fitting for your campaign. The truth is what will break the chains of delegates that the other candidates have been linking together.

The second phrase on the coin: "Send Me" - The guys in the unit go anywhere they are needed, whenever they are needed. The guys in the unit live by the words on the coin. By the way you have mentioned them in your speeches. Just some words of inspiration and support for you.

"Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying 'Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here am I. Send Me!'" Isaiah 6:8

Good luck this weekend!!!!

I am really touched when I read, "Here I am. Send me." I think he has summed up our campaign in the most accurate and elegant way.

Every day I feel stronger about this weekend. Our effort Saturday will show every delegate at the convention that this is not a status-quo campaign. We will show that I am the candidate the will bring the party together and guarantee a conservative keeps the 6th District.

-Jay r.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jayesmay.blogspot.com/2006/05/campaign-update-here-i-am-send-me.html' title='Campaign Update: Here I am. When I left this morning, there was a lot of talk about Kofi Annan taking $500,000 and giving some guy a job as payoff. I went looking for more about this story and found none. Why is that? This is a huge story, and it drops from the scene? That's wrong.

But, the good news is that I found this story on CNN. I normally don't look at CNN, but was getting desperate for more on the corrupt UN. And what did a find? A positive story about Iraq! From CNN!

People, do you need any more proof that things are getting better in Iraq? If CNN is doing a positive story, they must see the writing on the future wall. The corner has been turned. Just wait, this is the first of many.

Reading about Brigadier General Samon Talabani, I am reminded of General Daniel Morgan. These are the Patriots of the 21st Century. They are earning our faith and support. We cannot abandon them.

This was a banner afternoon. At least 4 more delegates have been listening, and they signed up supporting the Jay Esmay for Congress team. The thing is that we have never had any real strategy beyond our message. Go to the delegates and talk about who they want representing them. Tell them I believe we need to send different types of candidates to get different results. This is really getting fun.

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: Rules of Engagement

Many people have asked me why I have stepped into the arena? Why have I spent so much of my energy and time in the last year plus?

This motivation to step forward didn't happen overnight, but was built through a series of incidents. One of them happened while I was stationed at Hurlburt Field, FL at the 16th Special Operations Wing. A friend of mine was a planner in Somalia. He was in the gunship squadron (AC-130). Three times they had Aideed (who we were trying to eliminate) in their sights. But, to get permission to fire they had to radio the command post in Mogadishu; who called the command post in Tampa, FL; who called the command post at the Pentagon; who called the White House. Then the answer would travel back through each command post. Every time, the enemy was gone before the approval came.

My friend was a Major, and he went to a briefing at the White House to ask for a change in the ROEs (rules of engagement). There were many Generals around the table, and he was presenting to George Stephanopoulos, who was Clinton's Chief of Staff. Now, if you don't know, a Major in a room of Generals at the White House is a very, very insignificant player.

When my buddy finished, Stephanopoulos stood up, pointed a finger at him and said, "You will do nothing to embarrass this administration." My friend (and I, and everyone serving) thought that our mission was to carry out all lawful orders to protect and defend the constitution of the United States. Mr. Stephanopoulos felt the mission did not matter, the lives of our service men and women did not matter, whether we were successful in saving lives of others did not matter. The only thing that was important to Mr. Stephanopoulos was that the image of President Bill Clinton remain untarnished (good luck with that).

The ends justify the means.

For most in Washington, getting reelected is good, so anything you do to get reelected is good, no matter what. Even, in this case, if 29 American heroes die, 2 of them earning Medals of Honor. My navigator from Abilene, Texas, Captain Dave Melhop, was killed in a gunship accident enroute to "the Mogue." A good man, good husband, good father, good friend, great American.

When I say to you that, "The problem with Washington is that the people there are more concerned about getting reelected than doing the right thing," it is not just rhetoric. It is real-life experience. Experiences that make me grimace and growl. That is why I am doing this.

We need to start sending people to Congress with real-life Experience. We need to start sending people to Washington that are more concerned about serving the people, than serving their own careers.

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: What Makes a Great American?

Who would you call a great American?

a) The people in this picture; or

b) This young lady

Sergeant First Class Juanita Wilson gets my vote.

How many people in that picture do you think understand Sgt FC Wilson? He said that the House Immigration plan was racist. I was very disappointed to hear such an unfounded and backwards comment from a former President of the United States.

If I had my way, I would like to drive President Carter and those who share his point of view to Rockville, Minnesota to introduce him to Julio (alias) and Julia (alias). I hired them into Cold Spring Granite almost 5 years ago. Augustine and Carolina spent years abiding by the laws of our country applying for the proper visas and waiting to become part of our wonderful nation. They now live in their own house and are raising their children and living the American dream. I would like President Carter and those who agree with him to look Augustine and Carolina in the eye and explain to them why it's fair to let millions of people who broke the law, jump in line in front of them. I would like President Carter and his supporters to tell Augustine and Carolina that they should not have followed the law, they should not have respected our customs, that instead they should have broke the law in order to be rewarded later.

It's 10:30 PM now, and it's funny that O'Reilly has a guy on talking about "racism" and illegal immigration. The same issue came up while talking to a delegate today. She once worked for the State in the welfare department. I agreed with her that we need to secure the borders, but told her we need to eliminate incentives for illegals or the problem will never be solved. She said that the welfare system actually encourages illegals to cheat the system and that some State employees are actively involved in getting illegals financial assistance. This is exactly what we need to eliminate or the problem will not cease.

Another delegate called one of my supporters today to say the they have decided to join my team. This delegate said that our conversation convinced them that I am the best choice. This new supporter said, "If Jay gets 30 minutes to talk, everyone will vote for him." I wouldn't go that far, but I do know that momentum is building and our message will come through during that speech. I believe in the message and pray that I am able to present it in a fashion that moves the delegates to the right decision.

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: The Kline/Kennedy Mold

Don't you think it would have been nice to have someone authoring this bill who knows something about the intelligence community?

I spent two years attached to the Joint Staff in a highly classified intelligence function. All staffs in the military are organized in the same manner. "1" is the headquarters element, "2" is the intelligence element, "3" is operations, "4" is logistics, "8" is communications, etc... Anyways, I worked for the J32 at the Pentagon. J is for Joint Staff, which is the staff under the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. And I worked for the intelligence element under the operations chief; thus J32. Specifically, I worked at the Joint Warfare Analysis Center, or JWAC.

In other words, I understand the operational needs and problems of our special forces and military intelligence units.

Talking to one of my supporting delegates tonight, he was bringing up some of the arguments my opponents have leveled against me. He mentioned that some were arguing that I was, "shooting for too high of an office for my first time." I was about to begin the most obvious rebuttal, when he answered the question himself. He asked, "Is it OK to compare you to Mark Kennedy?" I agreed and pointed out that Congressman Kennedy went to Washington with business experience and Congressman John Kline went to Washington with military experience; neither had ever held political office.

This charge always chaps my hide because it implies that Federal Offices should be reserved for politicians. I don't buy it, and it's counter to the whole point of my campaign. We need more people with real-life experience in Washington, DC. It should be as our forefathers intended. Dedicated people step out of their normal lives, sacrifice for their country a few years, and then return to their normal routine. It was not intended to be the "Golden Ring" of politics that set someone up for life.

I am the only candidate on either side that strongly advocates term limits.

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: Gas Prices

I saw a short clip on the TV the other day talking about the Oil Crises back in the '70s. The humorous part was that the politicians of the day were saying the exact things that they are today.

Does anyone think that all of the squawking going on will really bring the price of gas down at the pump? It won't. Experts say it will settle back some in a few weeks. I put more faith in their assessment. There is little our elected officials can do to drive down the price of oil. If we could just reduce corruption and make peace between these tribes in Nigeria, the price would go down significantly. If Hugo Chavez would just admit that he's a corrupt dictator and doesn't really care about the poor of Venezuala, the price would go down significantly. If President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran would say, "Just kidding" and join the world of the sane, the price would go down significantly. These are the realities of our world that drive the price of oil and gasoline on the markets.

I totally support reviewing the actions of major corporations to ensure there is no collusion. Enron was a disgrace. There should be a lot more going to jail for that swindle. But those proceedings take months to investigate and years to prosecute. They have little to do with the price at the pump today.

Chuck Schumer knows that his tirade in front of a gas station will have no effect on the price of gasoline. He hopes, as we know, that it will have an effect on who gets elected in November. The sad part is that no Republican is calling their bluff. Instead we engage in the same useless bravado.

One of the delegates yesterday was very disappointed with the lack of compliance with the platform. He felt that we were slipping backwards and away from conservative principles. He was frustrated that the leadership was willing to put forth anyone as a "Republican" that might win, without regard to whether they supported the platform or not. This delegate felt it was a premeditated effort to water-down our party.

I agreed that there are plenty of RINO's (Republicans In Name Only) and elected officials often play loose with the platform. But, I pointed out that in the last 10 to 20 years the Republicans have gotten more conservative, not less. Governor Carlson no longer represents what it means to be a Republican in Minnesota. Our Governor said, "No more taxes," held the line, and resolved a deficit, IN MINNESOTA.

This is not our darkest hour, this is the rising of the Phoenix. This is a great country. We have a good life. We have a responsibility not just to enjoy and be thankful for what God has given us, but to make sure we preserve the good for our children. America the beautiful.

Again last night, I was talking to a delegate who was on another's slate. The conversation started with telling me that, and ended with a commitment to vote for me at the convention. One at a time.

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: Let Them Spin

Boy, this endorsement campaign is getting more interesting by the minute. I've heard quite a few rumors in the last few days, and when I hear most of them I just have to shake my head and smile. Let them spin, we'll just keep out-working them and spreading the winning message.

I am the top candidate for the following 2 reasons:

1) ELECTABILITY - It is a 2nd term, mid-term for the party in the majority. History shows that is a tough position. Here in Minnesota, people are frustrated with the State Legislature. They didn't accomplish anything in the last session and now their top priority seems to be stadium construction. The voters are dissatisfied.

Patty Wetterling will be the Democrat Candidate. Her strategy is to talk about the people, not the issues. I am the only candidate that can drive the debate to the issues. With my opponents, the press will focus on their personalities and their legislative records. To chose a State Legislator, we will be playing into their strategy. Look at Mark Kennedy and John Kline. They defeated incumbents, something the happens less than 2% of the time. A State Legislator would not have achieved these victories. Our best chance for victory is to put forth a candidate that can carry a positive message about being a conservative and drive the campaign to the issues.

2) LEADERSHIP/INTEGRITY - We desperately need a candidate that the 6th CD Republicans can unite behind. Washington DC needs more Veterans. Washington DC needs more people with real-life Leadership experience. Washington DC needs elected officials that place what's good for their District and our Country above their own careers. Washington DC needs more people that do not change who they are and what they say, based on the audience.

This is the message that I presented when I announced. This has been the sole effort of our campaign for the entire last 14 months. My success will not come because I can convince delegates that another candidate or candidates are less worthy. My victory at the convention will happen because we need more representatives that have real-life experience and are dedicated to serving the people first.

Again last night, I had a delegate that was on another slate, tell me how unhappy they were with the progress of this campaign. They complimented me for not getting, "dirty" and told me I had their vote. As always, I spoke with others and planted the seeds of reality. I am the only candidate that will unite the party and guarantee a Republican victory.

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: Covert Mission

The boys were at Camp Ripley this weekend for a Scout Camp. Collin (14) was bored, Brink (13) had fun, and Donnie (16) was thrilled. The Scouts have a program for scouts over the age of 15 called Extreme Adventure. The Army sponsors this event and they run teams through different activities. Donnie's team took first in 4 events and first place overall. Needless to say, I assume the Army does pretty well in recruiting from these groups, I know Donnie wants to join the Army.

So, this was the last weekend of conventions, less than 2 weeks left. This is definitely the home-stretch.

While much has been said about dirty campaign activities, I have tried to focus on the positives of this race. But, I must comment on one incident that happened this weekend. A veteran that returned from Iraq just months ago was slated to be a delegate. He was asked by one of the other candidates who he was supporting. He told the candidate that he was supporting someone else. After this delegate told the candidate he was not supporting him, he was challenged by two delegates and was defeated by another delegate that told the convention that he was supporting the candidate whom the honest delegate said he was not supporting.

I have been deliberately silent about much of what has gone on with this process. My philosophy has been, "Just tell me who the delegates are and I'll go talk to them." I believe in my message and the onus is on me to convince people. But, I find this situation beyond the pale of political civility. The only thing that was gained by disrespecting this young man, who just returned from fighting for our freedoms like this endorsement process, was one more vote. I'm not trying to turn this into an issue or capitalize on it, I'm just saying that the parties who orchestrated this maneuver should have known better. There are more important things than advancing your political careers.

I found out today, from a third party, that two delegates I was sure were supporting one of my opponents are now telling their friends they are voting for me. I know this had a big influence on these delegates too. I'm thinking my campaign should get a slogan like that investing group, "One Delegate at a Time."

If you've been reading my blog, then you know that I was in Special Operations. As a side note, the picture imbedded in my last blog of the MC-130H shooting flares, that was me in the pilot's seat. I was flying that over the Gulf of Mexico during a photo shoot.

Anyways, do you know the difference between Covert and Clandestine? Clandestine is when you do something to the enemy and they either do not know it happened or they think someone else did it. Covert means that they know it was you, but they didn't see it coming.

My campaign is a Covert Mission and I am looking forward to the convention.

- Jay r.

Campaign Update: Quiet Professionals

I deployed to the Middle East for several months while in Special Ops. One night we picked up a team that had been out in the field for a couple days. We landed at night on an unprepared field. The plane I flew was an MC-130H, Combat Talon II. It was fully night equiped and we wore night vision goggles that amplify the ambient light. It was a perfect landing on an unprepared surface.

After we stopped, the team loaded their gear. When the loadmaster called checklist complete to indicate they were all strapped down, I cued the co-pilot. He had rigged his walkman into the PA system. He played the Crew 7 (Lucky 7) theme song, BTO's Taking Care of Business. As the guitar riff started, I started running up the engines. Anyone who has ridden on the Ol' Herky knows that it gets rather noisy and shakes a lot when the brakes are held and the power is run up. We needed to be at full power before I released the brakes because of the short length of the runway. As the singer started with, "You get up every morning from the 'larm clocks warning, take the 8:15 into the city...." I released the brakes and we rumbled down the field. After getting airborne, the loadmaster opened a cooler we brought with iced Cokes and pulled out a couple pizzas. Since we picked these guys up in the middle of the desert and they had been in the field for a few days, they were extremely grateful for the chow. The next day they let us shoot some of their weapons.

The Special Ops motto is, "Quiet Professionals."

Tonight I had the pleasure of talking to two State Representatives/Delegates. Both were very cordial and supportive. I also appreciated their advice. The run continues with recruiting supporters. I picked up one that I hadn't been aware of until tonight and have a couple more that are leaning my way. Many of the delegates may have a preference at this point, but a lot will make the final decision just before they cast their ballot. Anyone who has been through an endorsement, knows that it is a secret ballot. So, you never know for sure.

They boys are packing for a campout this weekend. They are going to Camp Ripley for, "Ripley Rendezvous." Donnie has a track meet tomorrow, and it looks like I'll be driving him up after dinner. No rest for the weary since the final two conventions (SD-15 and Wright County) are Saturday morning. See you tomorrow.

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: Victory Without Honor is Not Victory

I pulled into the driveway at 9:50 tonight after spending the afternoon/evening knocking on delegate doors in Woodbury. That's a 90 minute drive, one way, for me. I just finished the plate of spaghetti that Lolly left for me and I'm now helping Collin study for a math test tomorrow. He's re-doing a couple of the problems he missed on his study guide that I corrected. He pretty much has it down, and I bet he'll get an "A" tomorrow. Even at this late hour, I still enjoy math.

Another evening of energizing talks with delegates. "Jeff" and I spent a few minutes talking. He relayed how one of the candidates had called him on the phone for a 45 minute talk and only strengthened Jeff's resolve not to vote for that candidate. We of course talked about the problems in Washington being caused by career politicians. I relayed how the other candidates and I are meeting Friday at the State Capital to sign another pledge to not run in the primary if we lose the endorsement.

This is at least the 4th pledge I've signed in addition to stating it another half-dozen times. Another Question for you Delegates: "Why do we have to make the same pledge so many times?" Answer: Because no one trusts politicians. And of course the wording is critical, because someone will look for a loophole to sneak their way into a primary.

My name is Jay Esmay, I say what I mean and do what I say. For me, when I say I will support the endorsed candidate, I will. You can take that to the bank.

Are you happy that this mentality is part of the system? Are you willing to have people represent you who believe the ends justify the means? And since their reelection is a good thing, whatever it takes to get elected is good, no matter what. I reject this.

I will go through any tribulation to win, but I will not compromise my principles. Victory without honor is not victory.

If you reject the, "ends justify the means" mentality too, then help me in this battle.

Off to sleep now. I gained a couple more tonight and remain ahead of the power curve on the delegate count. It's all about momentum!

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: Our Ranks are Growing

Well, I raced from work down to St Paul to do an interview with KARE 11. The more often I get the chance to put forth our positive message, the more I am convinced that this is the message that will carry the day.

I've had two delegates track me down, unsolicited, in the last two days to tell me they are supporting me. The momentum is building as we round the last turn for the final stretch. Our delegate count grows each day and not because we forced our "slates" through. Our ranks are growing because delegates are tired of the same-old political games. Our ranks are growing because we are at war and need representatives that will be a strong voice for our soldiers, saliors, airmen and marines. Our ranks are growing because we need representatives that are not tied to the political machine and are will speak out against powerful lobbies driving unrestrained spending.

Our ranks are growing because...people want to be proud of their representative and know that they will do what is best for the 6th District and not what is best for their career.

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: Why I'm Running

Last night's delegate discussion was about motivation for running. Talking to a delegate that is undecided, she said she appreciated that I was running as a non-politician. Her belief that political office should not become a career matched perfectly with the Jay Esmay for Congress campaign.

People often tell me I'm a great candidate, and then I ask if I'll run for State office if this doesn't work out. First, I'm going to win the endorsement and election, so this is a moot point. Second, I have said many times that I do not want to be a career politician.

I'm running for Federal office because my background, training, and real-life experience are exactly what we need representing us in Washington, DC. If we continue to elect people whose primary resume' is that they know how to work the system, then we can't be surprised when the system gets worked. And it does. If this does not work out, I have a beautiful wife, 4 wonderful children and a good job. I have enough to keep me busy, so no, I will not run for any other office.

Again, I'm running for this office out of a sense of duty. I'm running because only 17% of our representatives in the U.S. House have served on active duty. I'm running because spending is out of control and the root cause is that our officials are more concerned about getting reelected than they are about doing the right thing. I'm running because I believe that term limits will improve our government. I'm running because I know we need people with manufacturing / business experience to help bring about real solutions. I'm running because I am dissatisfied with how our government is performing.

Meeting with delegates is still going great. We're making strides every day.

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: Leadership

As a Junior in High School, our football team at Coon Rapids was 1 and 8. A truly dismal year. I remember vividly going to the first game my Senior year. We were traveling to Spring Lake Park. I was sitting up front. The bus was pretty quiet, because we were all concentrating on the battle to come. I spoke with my seat mate and was encouraging him and telling him his performance was critical to our success. To be polite, I then turned to my aisle mate and spoke with him too. Then I had to talk with his seat mate. I ended up walking the full length of the bus, grabbing each teammate's hand, pulling them close and making it clear that no matter if they were the star or "riding the pine," they were critical and we needed them to focus 110% on winning. As we exited the bus, I grabbed the hand of my seat mate and directed the others to do the same and fall in line. This became how we entered each game for the rest of the year. We won that game, went 7 and 2, won the conference and went to State. A Herculean turnaround from the previous year. And this with a team that our coach describe by saying, "We may be small, but we're slow." At the end of the season I was voted captain, most-valuable player and all conference center. And it all started on that bus ride to SLP.

It evolved slowly (I was an offensive lineman, so what do you expect) but I came to see that God had given me the ability to lead. I didn't plan to talk to each teammate to ensure they felt a part of the team, I just did it. I didn't ask to be Co-Captain of the basketball team, I just was. I didn't plan to be section lead in the Concert Band or lead drummer in the Jazz Band, I just was. I hadn't thought about being Senior Patrol Leader in the troop, I just was.

That year I decided that life was good and that I was indebted to these United States. Like my father did in 1939, I decided to join the military (in the late '70s, this was not a popular thing). I do not think that service should be mandatory, as it is in most Western nations. But, I think it should be an expectation we set with our children. My experience has taught me that we cannot have truly fulfilling lives without serving others. And at the U.S. Air Force Academy, they teach that you cannot be a leader until you become a good follower.

This Saturday I spoke with a delegate who is a member of the Minnesota Association of Christian Home Educators. He said there is a conference next weekend at the St. Paul River Center. He and I certainly agreed that the Federal Government should not be so deeply involved in education. We are a Federal government and this is a State and local issue. This delegate is a strong man of faith, and he felt we have our schools moving in the wrong direction. He and I also agreed that Home Schooling is an important part of reforming our education system. Competition must become part of teaching our children so that everyone involved is driven to provide the best. We must provide parents their right to have control over their childrens' education.

I also talked with the Senate District 51 BPOU Chair, Andy. He was being the good uncle and hosting two nephews, so we didn't get much time to talk. By the way Andy, I forgot to say this at your door; "Thanks for a great convention. It was organized, well run, and at a good venue."

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: How it All Began

In the military, we are taught to be apolitical. In other words, we cannot associate with any political party in a public forum. This is how I thought during my first few years as a civilian. Politics were outside of my view. That was, until our Elementary School PTSA dropped sponsorship of our Cub Scout Pack because of "liability exposure" because Boy Scouts of America was "Anti-Gay."

Just for some background: My father, Donald, was awarded the Silver Beaver (one of the highest honors in Scouting) for his service; both my older brothers are Eagle Scouts, as am I; three of my nephews are Eagle Scouts; my oldest son, Donnie, has everything completed for Eagle andjust needs to file his paperwork; Collin, is currently Senior Patrol Leader, and is 3 merit badges and his project away; Brink is a Patrol Leader and a Life Scout, one rank below Eagle; Lisa has a vest full of Girl Scout badges and talks about earning her "Gold Award" (the GS highest rank). I hope you understand that Scouting has been and continues to be a central part of my and my family's lives.

Back to the story - Lolly had been the President of the PTSA the year prior and I had been the Carnival Chair for two years in a row (it's the largest fund raiser of the year). When I heard of the decision, Lolly and I attended the next meeting. I asked the board members, who I mostly knew, what their real concerns were. They nearly unanamously felt that it was wrong that Scouts should exclude people based on their sexual preference. I pointed out that for Cub Scouts, it was inappropriate to talk about sex. I asked them if they thought that teaching our young men Duty to God, Duty to Country and Duty to others above self was a good thing to do. None of them answered. Instead of taking a stand, they remained silent. As if they were ashamed to admit that they did want to teach these important values. I knew most of the people, personally. At that moment I did not know any of them. To this day, I still cannot understand their actions. Scouting is such a part of who I strive to be.

But for every door that God closes....The next week I decided that I needed to work for the values that I hold dear. I called a friend who introduced me to longtime GOP activist Tom Ellenbecker, who knew Joe Maiers, who invited me to my first Republican meeting where, coincidentally, I got elected BPOU Co-Chair. That is how this journey began.

Today, I once again enjoyed the opportunity to speak with fellow Republicans about modern challenges. My mission for the last 14 months has been to convince delegates that I am the best candidate and I am the one that will beat Patty Wetterling. As we get closer to the Convention, the discussions get more focused and I feel more passionate with each passing moment. Our country needs candidates that want to serve, not just further their careers.

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: Where Have All the Statesmen Gone?

This AP story is a must-read - Robert Hirsch wonders where all the statesmen have gone. Ed Laliberte wishes politicians would stop bickering and start fixing the nation's ills. Diane Heller says everybody in Washington is corrupt or out of touch. "I don't see any great leaders on the horizon,'' says Heller....

Have you ever played basketball? Many times, as soon as the ball leaves your fingertips, you know whether it's going in or not. Some times you just "feel the magic" as the ball heads away and everything just feels right. That is how this campaign is feeling. This article is exactly the sentiment that I am feeling and it's why I'm running. This only reinforces why I'm the candidate that will win in November.

I was well ahead of my required pace for gaining delegates tonight. Everyday I feel stronger. Tonight I spoke with a delegate who was worried about the effect this campaign will have on the party. I pointed out that I am the only candidate that can truly bring everyone together. The worst thing we can do is deadlock and bring this campaign to a primary. We need to unite behind a candidate that will make us proud to be Republicans and make us proud to be conservatives.

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: Free Trade & Another Blog Endorsement

I'm proud to announce my third blog endorsement. Leo over at Psychmeistr's Ice Palace recently joined my team, saying:

"Jay has both the business sense and the military and intelligence expertise to represent Minnesota, as well as to be a congressional leader in security issues. Jay is 100% pro life, and pro-marriage. He expresses a commonsense approach to the immigration issue. He supports the Fair Tax Amendment. And, in not being tied in with the political establishment, Jay is not afraid to speak his mind, even when his position may be unpopular."

-----

Tonight's delegate lesson was about Free Trade. I was asked if I believed we could enter into trade with a 3rd World Country without having our economy go down so that their economy could go up. I did not buy this supposition. I do believe trade can be a win-win endeavor.

Toward the end, the delegate said we should have free trade without regulation. That is completely different. I do not believe we can have free trade with any other country without regulation or a treaty. But, we must always remember that making a treaty is like making a law. Any time we make a law, we take away some of our freedoms. Either the law says you cannot do something or you have to do something. Similarly, every time we enter into a treaty, we surrender some of our sovereignty. Like making laws, making treaties should not be taken lightly. We should enter them only when it is truly in our country's self-interest, not just in the interests of certain sectors of our economy.

I did add a couple more to my team tonight. Still ahead of the power curve.

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: Believing the Spin

I was talking to a delegate yesterday who was firmly behind one of my opponents. I know the delegate personally through business dealings. He told me, "Jay, I really like your background and what you stand for. But, someone without legislative experience will be overwhelmed in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Washington, DC." (It's obvious to me that these very words were uttered by my opponent to my friend). He spoke a little more about how important “political” experience is to being successful and how this lack would limit my ability to be a good Congressman. I waited and listened. When he was finished I asked, "Do you have an example of this happening?" He said he did not. I then pointed to Mark Kennedy, a businessman with no previous legislative experience. Kennedy’s lack of political experience has not hindered his performance. In fact, just the opposite is true. Mark has been a rising star for conservatives and his experience and training are more than just a tremendous asset, they are the bases for his success. In addition, I added that John Kline was in that same, "success based on real-life experience" boat. Kline, a man who served his country rather than playing political games in St. Paul, has been a true conservative in Congress and has become a leader on military issues and government restraint. Once the delegate considered this, in addition to the fact that his brother-in-law is in Iraq serving our country, he and I started to agree.

At another delegate's house, the line I heard was, "I'm concerned about your electability" (again, I'm certain the words used were uttered by my opponent to marginalize my effort). I described to this delegate Patty Wetterling's strategy for winning the election. Patty wants the focus to be on the candidates, and not on the issues. All Patty wants you to know is that she is a nice lady. She wants voters to ignore the fact that she is not very strong on the issues and her positions on the major ones are not aligned with the majority of 6th District voters. She wants the focus solely on her opponent and not on the issues.

If we put forth a politician in this environment, we jeopardize losing the seat. This is second-term, mid-term which is never good for the majority party. In addition, you have the DeLay and the Abramhof scandals and the press on a feeding frenzy. We need a candidate that does not have to defend the sins of the past in St. Paul or Washington. This is what Patty Wetterling wants more than anything, a candidate who has to overcome failures of the State Legislature before they can even campaign on the 6th district issues.

There is only one kind of candidate who can ensure this campaign focuses on the pertinent issues. There is only one candidate who's campaign will not be bogged down on State issue assaults. I am the only Republican in this race who can turn the debate to National issues.

But even more than what I am not, is what I am; a man of integrity who served in our nation’s Armed Forces at a time when it wasn't popular and a man who has achieved success in the business community. I am the candidate our country desperately needs, today.

In this campaign I am finding out more and more....spin never does well against facts.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

Campaign Update: An Expectations Game

"It's an expectations game," Oistad said, "The more stridently Printy claims front runner-status, the more damaging a close first ballot will be. We, on the other hand, will look much better than expected." "There is no November", Hoium & Oistad, Jeric Publications Inc., 1991 p. 87

My nephew had me read this book when we were first discussing running for Mark Kennedy's seat. This is one of the passages I happened to highlight. Grunseth, the underdog, ended up winning the endorsement.

I got my copy of the book signed by one of the authors this weekend. We discussed the campaign and we both had most of the same assessments, with one exception; he felt I could win and I know I will win. It was a nice conversation. We all enjoy talking politics or we wouldn't be doing this gig.

After the debate Saturday, a first time delegate spoke with Lolly. He was really impressed with my responses at the debate and described me as a, "true Statesman." I mention this not to stroke my ego, but to point out that people on the "inside" see things differently than the general population. Many of the delegates have already picked their candidate and it is my great challenge to get them to consider new information. I know that people who are not already predisposed would support a highly decorated, experienced veteran and successful business executive over politicians.

My challenge is to get delegates to really hear my message. If I do not win the endorsement, it will be my fault, not the message. That is why I'm fighting this fight. Our country needs leaders that place service above self. Today, more than ever.

At the first house I went to today, the delegate said, "I'm already supporting you, don't spend any time here." This was someone I hadn't identified previously. Math has always come natural to me. The endorsement ballots are math. I know how many new supporters I need each day/week, it's simple math. This is why I feel good about the campaign. Simple math. And, mine is based on looking people in the eye.

I got ahead of the curve today.

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: Why Socialism Failed

Thursday afternoon Collin (9th grade) wanted me to take him to the hardware store to buy parts for our sprinkler system. Since I was headed out, he talked his mom into taking him. Now, let me give you some insight into this motivated young man. Collin likes to hang with his friends. That takes money. We give him a small allowance, but that's not enough. Collin is good with his hands and a fast learner. I showed him how to fix the system last summer and now he does it on his own. I give him $20 per leak that he fixes. If it's more complicated, we negotiate more. This particular leak is rather significant and he asked for $50 to fix it, I told him $35. Now to the point. Collin is a good kid, but be assured he would not offer to fix my sprinkler without motivation. And, he certainly would not plead for us to get parts of his own accord. Collin wants the money. He also knows that if I have to go back after and fix his repair, he does not get the full amount. He does quality work and always earns the full amount. He plans to finish tomorrow and I have every confidence the leak will be gone permanently.

Now to the moral of the story. Socialism failed because Collin wants to fix my sprinkler. Socialism denies a basic human trait. People will work hard if they get something back. They will not work hard solely to benefit people outside of their immediate family. A system that tries to make all people equal, will only make all people equally miserable. This is not just a lesson only from my household, but has been played out over the 20th Century in the former Soviet Union, China, Cuba and others. So why do American liberals keep advocating Socialism? Why do they always resort to class warfare? I need to introduce them to my son.

I greatly enjoyed the SD 48 Convention and the forum/debate at the HD-16B Convention. I felt very good about both events and was further reminded that for every problem we face today, there is a solution. We just have to elect people that really, really want to solve the problems. That's what this campaign is all about. Which one of us will work to make our country stronger? Which of the candidates will the delegates be most proud to call their own?

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: Military Intelligence

Correction...Lisa said she was not "mad" as I blogged yesterday, but was "sad." She made it clear that I must make that correction. She was happy today since she saw me 3 times; I woke her, then came back from work to print my schedule, and then I got home before her bedtime.

Last night was a banner night. Talked to a couple delegates that are firmly in the Jay camp. I talked with M., who is the fairer half of a dual delegate household. They are exactly what our party needs. A young couple, building a family and a life together and taking time to support their conservative beliefs.

I also met with another delegate who was in Army Intel. He told me he was supporting another candidate when we started talking. After we talked about Able Danger and my background, we really made a connection.

To me the object lesson for our campaign is Able Providence. Congress' solution to increase the speed and dissemination of intelligence sharing was to create additional layers of bureaucracy. This is destined to fail. Able Providence is a response from operators. If you want real solutions then get people with real experience.

Have I mentioned that I spent 5 of my 14 years on active duty flying in Special Operations? In addition, I spent my last 2 years in a highly classified intelligence command attached to the Pentagon's Joint Staff. I worked in the Intelligence Community and know the players (CIA, DIA, NSA, etc.). Since all four candidates in this race agree that National Security is the #1 priority for the Federal Government, I have to ask:"What experience do you want in your representative at the federal level? Someone who knows how Saint Paul works, or someone who is trained and experienced in fighting today's unconventional, asymmetricall war on terrorism against an enemy with no fixed location?"

By the way, my sons Brink and Donald are both in track. Brink (7th grade) just started this week, but Donnie (11th) has already had a couple meets. Donnie is running the 2 mile and throwing the shot put. Since Brink just started, he's running a lot and hasn't picked an event yet. Both these guys are going to be 6'5" when all is said and done. I have another question. Given that I was about 4" taller than my dad, and my sons are going to be about that taller than me; "How tall will my great-grandchildren be? 7'2"?"

-Jay r.

Campaign Update: Immigration

Another day on the campaign trail. My daughter Lisa was mad because she didn't get to see me all day. She made me promise I would wake her up before I went to work and carry her downstairs. She's my Sweet Pea.

Listening to the Senate debate immigration is very frustrating. I know that either nothing will be done, or what gets passed will cost the taxpayers a lot and will not really solve the problem.

Do you want to stop illegal immigration? Really? Truly? Then we need to make it more costly for people to hire illegals than to hire people legally eligible for these positions. When we start laying severe fines on contractors, landscapers, corporate and family farms, large corporations, and households that hire illegals to clean their house or watch their children, then we will really start to resolve the issue.

To just build a dam at the border will slow the river of immigrants for a while, but eventually the flow will go over the top at the same rate or higher. That is not a solution, it's a bandaid. Certainly we need to shore up our borders, but we should be spending the larger part of our effort on solving the problem. The ironic thing is that we already have the laws in place to fix the problem, we just need to enforce them. Instead, our solution is to make more laws that we may or may not enforce.

This is another example of why we need people with practical experience in Congress. People that are not afraid to say what needs to be said, even when it is against large lobbying organizations.

Have you ever heard of the term "obfuscate?" This is the primary tool of a career politician.

Jay R.

Campaign Update: "We need more veterans in Congress"

Another fruitful night. I left work today and went out door knocking around the district. The first house I went to had an Annapolis grad. They felt we need more veterans in Congress. I heartily agree. It should be no surprise that I pointed out that I was the only veteran, on either side, in the race.

The last delegate I visited told me about a segment on Rush Limbaugh yesterday. They were talking about how illegals were being released to pick fruit in California, and a Congressman was telling the INS to stay away until the crops had been picked. Mr. Limbaugh stated that the Representative is more concerned about getting reelected than enforcing our security. The delegate pointed out that this reelection focus is what I had said was the problem with Washington DC. It is.

We need a representative we know will not change when they get in office. We need someone who will do the right thing, even when it doesn't advance their political career.

-Jay r.

A Great Weekend!

The conventions on Saturday went very well and I had a great time talking to the delegates. I was able to go and knock on some doors after the conventions on Saturday.

The boys spent the weekend at a Scout camp. Lolly & Lisa went to the cities this morning for a dance contest. Lisa's team took second overall and first in their division. Go Girl! I was able to get the boys' clothes in the washer before I left to door knock. Lolly really hates the smell of stale smoke. I like it. It reminds me of camping when I was a Scout. The basement is still full of hanging camping gear that is drying out.

I heard a first on Sunday. A delegate I talked to said he liked the mailings he was getting from the other campaigns. Most of the feedback I have heard is that many people are disappointed by the negative tone of the mailings….to each his own I guess. He and I did agree that "we are United STATES" and the Federal government is too big. I think by the end of our conversation we were on the same page. I am sure that I worked my way up his list, but still have some work to do.

I am heading back to work and then phone calls to delegates.

-Jay

A Message from Jay

Hi, this is Jay. Really!

Steve Messick (my campaign manager) and I thought we should start a running dialogue on our blog as we head into the final stretch for the Endorsing Convention. I’m shooting for a daily entry about my activities and how the race is going. I hope you enjoy living this exciting time with me.

So, last night I was calling folks who live in Woodbury (and by the way, it was me calling, not a campaign worker.) One delegate told me he was supporting someone else. I still gave my pitch. He then asked me if I was positioning myself for a run at another office. The answer is no, and I want to address this issue with you.

I know politicians say a lot of things. I’m discovering people don’t take them at their word. I guess I don’t either, usually. But I am not a politician. Rather than running for political office for the majority of my working life, I have served in our Nation’s Armed Forces and have worked to excel in the business community.

I am not running for Congress to simply hold an office, or climb the political ladder. I am running for U.S. Congress because my backgrounds in military and manufacturing, combined with my internal moral compass, are exactly what we need to send to Washington.

If the delegates decide someone else should represent them, I will gladly assist their campaign, while continuing my work in manufacturing. I will not run for a State Office and, unlike the desperate DFL'ers running for Rep. Sabo's seat in the 5th District, you can take me at my word.

Based on my delegate calling and door knocking, I feel very good about the campaign. My message has been consistent. In order to keep the 6th District in conservative hands, we need to endorse a candidate with national security expertise, strong family values, and business leadership experience who is independent of the many mistakes made by incumbent Republicans. It's good food-for-thought for the DFL and anyone else who has been making noise about the Midwest Heroes Ads:

Hey Jay,

How have you been? I am coming home soon. I leave for kuwait on the 23rd. I should be home on the 24th or 25th. I can not wait. Life is so good in the states. Seeing how people live here really makes me think how easy we really have it. I am glad we are here helping this country out. I pray that we keep making changes and people don't have to live in terror until the day they die. It's kind of funny when we go through the towns and all the children and their parrents wave at us with big smiles. It makes being here a lot easier knowing that these people appreciate us being here.

I don't like to watch the news anymore because how the media screws everything up. I believe the people in the U.S. have the wrong image of what is going on here. Since i see things first hand, I know what it really is like. It is always fun to hand out something as simple as a little piece of chocolate to the children. They love it so much. It's those little things that Americans take for granted that make the Iraqi childrens' day. Take it easy and hope to see you when I return.

God bless,

Adam {name/rank removed}

Presidents Weekend TV Appearances

This weekend, Jay Esmay will be appearing on the following local television programs to discuss the race in Congressional District 6:

Almanac with Eric Eskola and Cathy Wurzer
Friday, February 17th, 7:00 PM - TPT Channel 2

At Issue with Tom Hauser
Sunday, February 19th, 6:00 AM - KSTC Channel 45
Sunday, February 19th, 9:00 AM - KSTP Channel 5

Be sure to tune in!

Esmay Welcomes Wetterling to the Race

Jay Esmay is Ready for Patty Wetterling
Esmay is the Best Candidate for GOP Endorsement to Take on Wetterling

St. Cloud, MN – February 3rd, 2006 - Congressional candidate Jay Esmay has been prepared since day one for Wetterling to enter the 6th District race. An excerpt from an interview by Tim Budig of ECM Publishers, from September 27, 2005, described Jay’s thoughts on Wetterling entering the race:

“One Republican 6th District congressional candidate feels down to the marrow that Democrat Patty Wetterling will run again for Congress in the district. ‘I know that in my bones,’ said Jay Esmay of St. Cloud.” (ECM Publishers, September 27, 2005)

Regardless whether the Democrats endorse Wetterling or Tinklenberg, Esmay is the Republican Candidate with the best chance of defeating them in the general election. “I know I have the best chance of beating the Democratic candidates, whoever they may be, because I am the only Republican candidate in this race who can drive the campaign to the issues. I do not have to defend the sins of the past, like legislative mistakes or a history of political gamesmanship. I can talk about my experiences of serving in the military and my success in the business community,” said Esmay. “I will be able to bring my knowledge of national security and business to the forefront of the campaign, which is what the 6th District voters want.”

The Esmay campaign will not have to change strategy, since the campaign has been preparing since day one for Wetterling to enter the race. Esmay will continue to focus on earning the endorsement of Republican delegates in the 6th District race.

Armey on Congress

The Jewish World Review has published a story by John H. Fund, in which Mr. Fund has an interview with former House Majority Leader Dick Armey about what the Republican Leadership in Congress needs to do in order to remain in the majority.

In the article the honorable Dick Armey talks about how the Republican leadership has abandoned its principles of shrinking government spending, in favor of political opportunity. Armey stressed the importance of returning to fundamentals of our party, saying “When we act like Republicans, we win. Otherwise, we lose in the end.” (Dick Armey, Jewish World Review; The Republican Soul: Tom DeLay's predecessor talks about how to reclaim it; Fund, John H.)

This article is another example of how professional politicians, no matter what party they are from, continue to trade their ideologies for political gain.

Jay Esmay is the only candidate in this race who is not a professional politician. Jay will remain true to his conservative roots because he has not made, and will not make, his career about winning political games. Jay Esmay will fight for the return of our conservative agenda in Washington.

“I am sick and tired of the out of control spending that is going on under our watch. We need to stop sending lawyers and professional politicians to Washington and we need to remove incentives for members of Congress to stay in office for their entire careers,” said Esmay.

Jay Esmay has been an advocate for term limits from day one of his campaign and will work on solutions in Congress to increase member turnover by removing incentives (such as lucrative pension plans) for members to remain in office for their entire careers.

6th District Candidates Sound Off on Twin Cities.com

A new feature on the St. Paul Pioneer Press' website allows readers to view videos of the candidates for the 6th district race answering questions about their backgrounds and positions on selected policy matters. Jay has been a proven leader who gets results, which makes him the strongest all-around candidate for the endorsement and best candidate to win the general election in November.

GOP Flyers Exemplify Esmay's Advantage

It is becoming clearer and clearer that this will be a tough election for Republicans and an even tougher election for Republican incumbents. The latest polling data is showing that voters are growing more skeptical of their elected officials. In an article in The USA today, author Susan Page said that "Views of whether most members of Congress and the respondents' own representatives deserve re-election have sunk to levels not seen since 1994, when Democrats lost control of both houses." (USA Today; 01/09/2006; Page, Susan) Full story USA Today/CNN/Gallup Poling Data

We, as Republicans, know that we are right on the issues that matter most to the American public. We have a plan to fight and win the war on terror, we have a plan to reduce spending and to shrink the bureaucracy, and we are dedicated to defending life and liberty. However, this election will not turn on which party is right or wrong on the issues, rather the outcome will hinge on the ability of Republicans to get their winning message to the voters. The Democrats are poised with tactics of misinformation and theatrical distractions. We need to ensure that we endorse a candidate who will be immune to these Democratic games.

Jay Esmay is the only candidate in this race who will be able to drive the 6th district campaign to the issues. Jay will not have to spend time and energy defending a political record that the Democrats would undoubtedly distort. Jay will be able to talk about his leadership in our Armed Forces and his success in the business community.

The other Republican candidates in this race have already given us prime examples of Jay's advantage in avoiding political gamesmanship. At past debates and public forums, they circulated various fliers and brochures that attacked each other on their voting records (i.e. this, this, and this). Jay's name did not appear on these fliers and he was not included in their attacks. The other candidates have already found that they cannot attack Jay with their political games, and the Democrats will realize the same thing this November.

As we look to past examples in Minnesota, both Congressmen John Kline and Mark Kennedy won hard-fought elections against strong incumbents. They won because they were able to drive their campaigns to the issues at the heart of every Republican victory. Those issues are national security, lower taxes, lower spending, smaller government, life, and family values. Both Kline and Kennedy were stronger candidates than their Democratic and Republican contemporaries, because they had lived their values and ideals, were proven leaders outside of politics and, thus, had incomparable credibility with the voters.

Jay shares both the business and military leadership backgrounds of these two great men. Jay will drive the 6th district election to the issues better than any other candidate in this race, and he has real world credibility on the issues that matter most to the voters. These attributes make Jay the best candidate for the Republican endorsement for congress.

Jay is the Candidate Who Will Win in November

The following link is to an article about the political outlook for 2006, by T.W. Budig, the political reporter for ECM publishers. Mr. Budig has been reporting from the front-line of Minnesota politics for many years and offers valuable information on the upcoming election cycle.

In his review, Mr. Budig appropriately asks the question, "Will 2006 be a tough one for Republicans?" Undoubtedly it will be, especially for incumbent Republicans. Minnesotans are not happy that the State Legislature did not complete its business this year, which lead to a government shut down. Voters are also leery about the recent financial scandals coming from Washington, which the Democrats will undoubtedly try to blame on Republicans. While many of the Democratic allegations are without merit, and DFL political gamesmanship was the true cause for the government shut down, voters will be inundated with DFL propaganda which will have an impact on the 2006 elections.

In order to retain the 6th district seat we need to endorse a candidate who is not from the political establishment of the State Legislature. Candidates in this race who are members of the State Legislature will have to spend more than half the campaign defending the sins of the past, while a candidate away from the political establishment can talk about the issues at the center of every Republican victory.

Jay Esmay is the only candidate in this race who is not a career politician, and is the only candidate who has served in our nation's Armed Forces. Mr. Budig's article illuminates Jay's distinction from the other Republican candidates by stating that, "In a way, the 6th District scramble resembles the DFL gubernatorial fray with an array of establishment candidates plus a newcomer, former U.S. Air Force C-130 pilot Esmay."

Jay has spent his life serving our nation in the military and working hard to achieve success in the business community. These are the experiences that Jay will bring to the general election in November, and which give him the most credibility with the voters.

Please visit the following link to read the entire article by T.W.
